A couple of months back I started work on my clients’ winter wardrobes. Last weekend, finally, I had a chance to turn some attention to my own ; )
It might surprise you, but I don't want to spend a lot of money. I treat my own wardrobe as I would any client’s, forcing myself to think long and hard about the pieces I can buy that make the absolute most out of what I already have. Now you know one of my most valuable styling tips!
There are staples that will always find their way in there. I’m pretty much addicted to Uniqlo cashmere turtle necks, and I can never have too many jeans (18 pairs currently hanging out in the closet, current favourites are all by Rag and Bone.
A winter coat? Absolutely. But not just one. You need a good supply. I buy a new coat each year but, crucially, in a style that I don't already own. With the iffy British weather, these keep working long beyond their allotted seasonal slot. I’ve been in my latest addition from LK Bennett most of this week, well before the meteorological onslaught truly hits.
But none of the above are the one piece I’m insisting that you invest in for your winter wardrobe this season. Because that one piece, is a leather skirt.
There is SO. MUCH. leather around this season. Not all of it good. But if it’s cut right, it instantly injects a bit of modernity into your wardrobe. Avoid anything that harks back to the 80s, or that’s the colour of Heinz tomato soup. Keep it simple with a midi skirt in black. My pick is the wrap skirt by Karen Millen. I absolutely love how this skirt has great definition at the waist and… POCKETS! Plus, it’s long enough to keep your knees warm. It’s winter (nearly) after all…
Here are some of my favourite leather pieces that you can buy on the high street NOW.
I love the simplicity of this dress and yet it packs a foxy punch due to it being leather, go easy on the accessories with this one as less is most definitely more when it comes to styling up a statement dress such as this.
